Kabob, Kebab, or Shish?

Last night a question was raised as to the meaning of Shish Kabob. In looking at a menu, Shish Kabob appeared to be lamb on a skewer, Shish Tawook was chicken on a skewer, and Filet Mignon Kabob was Filet on a skewer. So, Shish wasn't the skewer, nor was Kabob. There was speculation that Kabob was lamb, but that didn't seem to be the case either. So, I looked it up. Courtesy of www.dictionary.com, here is the definition of Shish Kabob:
A dish consisting of pieces of seasoned meat and sometimes vegetables roasted on skewers and served with condiments.
When I just searched Kabob, I got the following:
First, there are three ways to spell kabob, the other two including kebab or kebob.
Second, these two definitions:
Shish kebab
n : cubes of meat marinated and cooked on a skewer usually with vegetables [syn: kebab, shish kebab]

So, apparently the shish and kebab, kabob, kebob are all more or less synonymous.
Mystery solved. :)
